T1 Services Liberalization and its Incorporation in theManufacturing Industry

AB Uno de los fenómenos más importantes del desarrollo económico delas últimas décadas ha sido el crecimiento del sector servicios, el cual hoyrepresenta el principal sector económico a nivel mundial, así como unacreciente proporción del comercio internacional. Entre las causas que explicaneste crecimiento se encuentra la apertura comercial a la cual han estadosujetos. Sin embargo, debido a la naturaleza de las barreras al comercio deservicios y por tanto la forma en la cual se establecen sus compromisos, elanálisis del impacto de las negociaciones comerciales sobre la incorporaciónde servicios en la industria doméstica no ha sido profunda. Este artículo busca,a través del uso de una nueva base de datos que cuantifica la liberalizaciónalcanzada en el Acuerdo General de Comercio de Servicios (AGCS), analizarsu impacto en la penetración de servicios importados dentro de la industriamanufacturera. Utilizando datos de la Matriz de Insumo-Producto Mundial(WIOD) para 43 países en el período 2000-2014, logramos establecer quela incorporación de servicios importados en la industria doméstica estápositivamente correlacionada con el nivel de apertura consignado en el AGCS
AB One of the most important phenomena of economic development in recentdecades has been the services sector growth, which today represents themain economic sector worldwide, as well as a growing share of internationaltrade. Among the causes that explain this growth is the trade opening to whichthey have been subject. However, due to the nature of barriers to trade inservices and therefore the way in which their commitments are established, theanalysis of the impact of trade negotiations on the incorporation of servicesin the domestic industry has not been profound. This article seeks, throughthe use of a new database that quantifies the liberalization achieved in theGeneral Agreement on Trade in Services (GATS), to analyze its impact on thepenetration of imported services within the manufacturing industry. Using datafrom the World Input-Product Database (WIOD) for 43 countries in the period2000-2014, we managed to establish that the integration of imported servicesinto the domestic industry is positively correlated with the level of opennessrecorded in the GATS
