AB Alan Cameron’s translation and interpretationof Sidonius, Ep. 8.3.1 inc. are fast approachingthe status of orthodoxy, partly through their endorsement by Van Hoof and Van Nuffelen. Yetnot only does fresh scrutiny of the Latin combined with what those three scholars emphatically lacked, viz. familiarity with Sidonius,provide ample food for discontent; the intemperate verbiage the bishop is saddled with remains scarcely accounted for by their exegesis.It should therefore be assigned to scribal corruption. For the first time, energetic steps aretaken to clear up both thought and wording inconformity with Sidonius’ manner
