AB The moon traditionally presides over encounters betweenlovers. The connection between love and the moon is a universalcommonplace. This article analyses the relationship between the moonand lovers in Greek and Latin literature, examines in detail the differentinvocations to the moon placed in the mouths of lovers, both thoserelating to the practise of magic and the purely literary, and defines theessential features of this literary motif.
