T1 La leyenda negra contra España durante el Romanticismo inglés: las colecciones biográficas de Mary Hays

AB En este trabajo se analizan las referenciasa España en dos colecciones biográficasde la escritora inglesa Mary Hays: FemaleBiography (1803) y Memoirs of Queens(1821), pues en ellas aparecen varios hechoshistóricos en los que se ha fundamentadola llamada Leyenda Negra, como laInquisición, las persecuciones de protestanteso la sospechosa muerte del infanteDon Carlos. Lo cierto es que las mujeresespañolas en estos textos son pocas; sinembargo, en las diversas biografías tambiénaparecen otros personajes históricos, comoCarlos V y Felipe II, y puesto que estos dosmonarcas gobernaban un gran imperio, aellos iba dirigida la mayor parte de la propagandaantiespañola de su tiempo y tambiénmucha de la posterior. No obstante,dada la época en la que se publicaron lascolecciones de Hays, ciertas pinceladas románticasson asimismo observables
AB This article will analyse the referencesinvolving Spain in two biographical collectionsby the English writer Mary Hays:Female Biography (1803) and Memoirs ofQueens (1821), given that in these twotexts there appear various historical eventswhich are the main focus of the so calledBlack Legend, such as the Inquisition, thepersecutions of Protestants and the suspiciousdeath of the Infante Don Carlos.Indeed the Spanish women in these collectionsare scarce; however, in some of thebiographies other Spanish historical figuresalso emerge, such as Charles V and PhilipII, and since these two monarchs ruled agreat empire, the greatest part of the anti-Spanish propaganda of their time andmost of the subsequent one was addressedto them. Nevertheless, given the period oftheir publication, certain Romantic tracesare also observable in Hays’s collections
