Ahora bien, sorprende quequien nunca puso el pie en Estados Unidosy representó una cultura cuyos valores difierenllamativamente de los inmersos en elAmerican Way of Life, se convirtiera en unpersonaje de cariz mítico dentro de la culturanorteamericana casi desde los iniciosde la nación. La trayectoria del Descubridoren Estados Unidos como héroe y comosímbolo está revestida de una importanciaextraordinaria. La identificación que losnorteamericanos han mostrado con su figuraha sido siempre un espléndido acto deapropiación y manipulación.
AB The mystery that has always surroundedthe figure of Columbus and the prejudiceswith which he has been treatedtransform him into a never ending sourceof literary inspiration for any period of history.Yet, it is surprising that a man whonever set foot in the United States and whorepresented a culture with dramaticallydifferent values from those embedded inthe American Way of Life could becomea mythical character within American culturesince the origins of the nation. Theimage of Columbus in the United States,as a hero and symbol, is significant. Americanshave showed that their identificationwith Columbus is a splendid exercise ofimaginative and political appropriationand manipulation.
