abstract = {The Physician's story in Chaucers Canterbury Tales and its connections with the story-teller has always been a puzzle for literary critics. The purpose of this paper is to articulate a possible explanation of the plot and its connection with the teller by analysing the physician-narrator's discourse together with Chaucers additions to the original narrative, and the author's treatment of the concepts of authority, sovereignty and power in relation to the story-teller and the characters depicted in the story.
