AB En este artículo, partiendo del paradigmático caso español,se analiza la historia reciente de las relaciones europeas con los paísesárabes del Mediterráneo para ver que hay de cierto en la narrativa ofi cialcon la que se pretendió recibir las denominadas revoluciones árabes:como acontecimientos de “dimensiones históricas” que demostraban sinsombra de duda la inevitabilidad del modelo europeo como único caminohacia la modernidad, el bienestar y el desarrollo las poblaciones de laregión. La conclusión es que las lecciones para Europa de esta nueva seriede revoluciones sean algo distintas de las que se han querido extraer:el origen profundo de esta nueva ola revolucionaria es socio-económicoy tiene que ver lo que está sucediendo desde el inicio de esta varianteglobalizada, desregulada fi nancieramente y neoliberal del capitalismo.
AB This article, based on the paradigmatic case of Spanish foreignpolicy, traces the recent history of European relations with the Arab countriesof the Mediterranean to see what is true in the offi cial narrative withwhich the so-called Arab revolutions were received: as events of “historicaldimensions that proved beyond doubt the inevitability of the Europeanmodel as the only path to modernity, welfare and development of theregion’s populations. The conclusion is that the lessons for Europe of thisnew series of revolutions are somewhat different from those that havebeen advanced: the root cause of this new revolutionary wave is socioeconomicand has to do with what is happening since the beginning of thisglobalized, fi nancially deregulated and neoliberal version of capitalism.
