AB Este trabajo se ocupa de la metamorfosisque Walter Scott opera sobre la figura quijotescapara transformarla en un tipo recurrenteen la narrativa decimonónica europea, puesestá vinculado a una de sus variantes más características,el bildungsroman. Tal metamorfosisse produce en Waverley, or ‘tis Sixty YearsSince (1814), por lo que, en primer lugar, seanalizan los rasgos quijotescos distintivos delnuevo tipo de héroe que Scott formula en estanovela: su imaginación romántica de raíz literariay su inadecuación a un modelo heroicode carácter caballeresco. A continuación, seestudia la inserción de tal quijotismo en unrelato de aprendizaje y desilusión para, finalmente,mostrar cómo el héroe quijotesco quecristaliza en Wavelery dará lugar a un tipo derelato que podemos denominar la novela delhéroe fallido. El héroe quijotesco decimonónicoes resultado de las transformaciones queScott y otros autores efectúan no solo sobre eloriginal español sino también sobre sus metamorfosisextranjeras posteriores
AB This essay deals with the metamorphosisoperated by Walter Scott on the quixoticfigure, which turns him into a recurring typein nineteenth-century European narrative,since it is associated with one of its mostdistinctive kinds, the bildungsroman. Thismetamorphosis takes place in Waverley, or ‘tisSixty Years Since (1814), so, in the first place,the quixotic features of the new type of heroformulated by Scott in this novel are examined:his romantic imagination rooted in literatureand his unsuitability for a heroic roleof chivalric origins. Then, the essay explainshow this quixotism is immersed in a narrativeof apprenticeship and disillusionment,and, finally, how the quixotic hero whichemerges in Waverley will give rise to a kind ofnarrative which is described as the novel of thefailed hero. The nineteenth-century quixotichero is the result of the transformations thatScott and other authors implement not onlyon the original Spanish model but also on itslater foreign metamorphoses
