T1 Health, wellness and medical tourism - a conceptual approach

AB Nowadays, health, wellness and medical tourism are recognized as oneof the most developed and growing sector of today’s thriving tourismindustry that has increased its activity worldwide, due to a lot of social andeconomic circumstancies that leads people to achieve and pursue abetter quality of life. However, these kind of tourism face a multitude ofchallenges and one of that challenges is the discrepance on its differentconceptual approaches and definitions.A literature review on this topic with a descriptive, comparative andexploratory nature was conducted, building a theoretical framework onthis field of study. Units of meaning for the definition of the conceptcategories were elected, which allowed to reflect and sintetize thedifferent approaches to the topic. This analysis brought otherperspectives of identification and description of distinct themes, includinga few issues about health, wellness, medical tourism, wellbeing andquality of life.Therefore, the main goal of this paper is to summarize and clarify thiscomplex and sweeping concept that assumes in a prominent role in theglobal context of tourism and results in a concise overview of the literatureproduced on the subject towards a small contribution to a betterunderstanding of the concept.
AB Hoy en día, la salud, el bienestar y el turismo medico están considerados como uno de los sectores más desarrollados y con más crecimiento de la prospera industria turística de hoy día, que ha incrementado su actividad en todo el mundo debido a una gran cantidad de circunstancias sociales y económicas que han llevado a la gente a lograr y perseguir una mejor calidad de vida. Sin embargo, este tipo de turismo se enfrenta a una multitud de desafíos, siendo uno de ellos es la discrepancia de sus diferentes enfoques conceptuales y definiciones. Una revisión de la información sobre este tema con carácter descriptivo, comparativo y exploratorio fue llevada a cabo, construyendo un marco teórico en este campo de estudio. Se eligieron unidades de significado para la definición de las categorías de concepto, lo que permitió reflejar y sintetizar los diferentes enfoques sobre el tema. Este análisis trajo otras perspectivas de identificación y descripción de distintos temas, incluyendo algunos temas relacionados con la salud, el bienestar, el turismo médico y la calidad de vida. Así pues, el principal objetivo de este documento es resumir y clarificar este complejo y arrollador concepto que asume un papel prominente en el contexto global del turismo y resulta en una visión concisa de la información producida sobre este tema hacia una pequeña contribución para un mejor entendimiento del concepto.
