AB Jovellanos es, para muchos historiadores,el símbolo más válido de laIlustración española. También fue en sumomento, para buena parte de la opiniónpública revolucionaria, la víctima más conocidade ese espíritu de fanatismo español,de larga duración, encarnado entoncespor la monarquía absoluta de Carlos IV. Sincompartir por entero los principios ideológicosde la tolerancia, pues no participóde su relativismo filosófico ni en política nien religión, Jovellanos fue un gran toleranteen actitudes y conductas y su actividad públicase nutrió de prudencia y reformismotranquilo. Este trabajo estudia los libros ylecturas en los que Jovellanos aprendió ausar los conceptos propios de la prudenciay de donde extrajo algunos de sus modelosde comportamiento. Para ello se analizael contenido de su biblioteca, tal como eraen 1778, y se revisan las obras, presentes en ella, en que fueron tomando forma lasideas de moderación y concordia desde elHumanismo hasta la Ilustración. Tambiénse examinan las lecturas que el propio Jovellanosdeclara ir haciendo a lo largo delos años, a fin de identificar la procedenciaintelectual de su práctica de la tolerancia.
AB Jovellanos is, for many historians,the most valid symbol of the SpanishEnlightenment. He was also at the time,for a large part of the revolutionary publicopinion, the best-known victim of thatlong-lasting spirit of Spanish fanaticism,then embodied by the absolute monarchyof Carlos IV. Without fully sharing the ideologicalprinciples of tolerance, as he didnot participate in philosophical relativismin politics or religion, Jovellanos was largelytolerant in attitudes and behaviors andhis public activity was nourished by goodjudgement and calm reformism. This workstudies the books and readings in whichJovellanos learned to use the concepts ofgood judgement and from where he extractedsome of his behavioral models. For this, the content of his library is analyzed,as it was in 1778, and the works present init are reviewed, in which the ideas of moderationand harmony were taking shapefrom Humanism to the Enlightenment. Thereadings that Jovellanos himself declares tobe doing over the years are also examined,in order to identify the intellectual origin ofhis practice of tolerance.
