T1 Theophanes of Mytilene and Cn.Pompeius Aspects of an unlucky relation

AB Teófanes de Mitilene alcanza el más alto honoral que un griego sometido podía aspirar, a suregreso tras cuatro años de campañas con Pompeyopor Oriente. En pago a su epopeya sobre lashazañas del Magno, su ciudad y él mismo fueronliberados, y a partir de ahí, para Teófanes todofueron reconocimientos. Pero las fuentes subrayanque esta relación entre el griego y su patrono, nofueron tan beneficiosas para el romano como parael primero, y que Teófanes no supo estar a la alturade las circunstancias del estadista romano, sobretodo en los años que siguieron. La relación entreambos estuvo caracterizada por una cadena demalos consejos y peores decisiones que finalmentecondujeron al destino fatal de Pompeyo trasFarsalia
AB Theophanes of Mytilene gets the highesthonour to which a subjected greek citizen couldaspire, when he returned after four years ofmilitary campaign in the cohors praetoria ofCn. Pompeius, across the East. Theophanes andhis town were rewarded with the civitas and thefreedom, respectively, because of the epic reporthe wrote about the expedition. Literary sourcesshow that these relations were not as profitable toPompeius as to Theophanes, who didn’t know howto rise to the occasion of the roman magistrate,during the following years. That relation betweenthe two of them was distinguished by a successionof bad hints and worst decisions, which finally leadto Pompeius to his tragic ending
