AB The article analyses the figure of Penelope in her role as transmissor of royal power,a role that she acquires when her husband, Odisseus, basileus of Ithaca is missed for alungtine. This fact has been used to support the existence of a matriarchal structure inAncient Greek society. The purpose of the article is to challenge this view, and present anew interpretation of Penelope's role in the transmission of royal power.
