RT Journal Article T1 Family Impact and Parenting Styles in Families of Children with ADHD A1 Muñoz Silva, Alicia A1 Lago Urbano, Rocío A1 Sánchez García, Manuel AB Attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD)begins in childhood and is characterized by attention deficits, hyperactivity, or impulsiveness that is inconsistent witha child’s developmental level. The effects of ADHD are notlimited to the child alone but can affect their familial context, particularly parenting styles. Using data from 68 parentsof 6–11-year-old ADHD-diagnosed children, weattempted to identify the predictive variables of two parentingstyles: criticism-rejection and permissivenessindulgence. We analyzed two complex predictive modelsusing structural equation modeling. We hypothesized thatfamily impact variables would mediate the relation betweenthe child’s behavior and parenting. The data showed that thechild’s ADHD was only indirectly related to parentingstyles, whereas child’s behavior problems had a directrelationship. The results stressed the central role of thechild’s behavior on family social life, parents’ marital relationship, and parents’ feelings about their children. Thesevariables mediated the relationship between the children’sdisorders and parenting styles. On the other hand, perceivedsocial support had an inverse relationship with this negativefamily impact, and it even had relevant indirect effects oncriticism and permissiveness.
