AB Este estudio pretende contribuir al empeñohistoriográfico de visibilización de la mujer enla Historia de la Edad Moderna (siglos XVIy XVII). Para ello analizamos las ventajas ylimitaciones de la viudedad femenina en unaparte del Reino de Sevilla, cotejando el papelasignado a las viudas en el ordenamiento legalcastellano con la realidad espacial del Andévaloy parte de la Tierra Llana onubense.Indagamos en los hogares encabezados porviudas, analizando su importancia cuantitativa,los mecanismos garantistas de la legislacióny la práctica social tendente a afianzar lasupervivencia femenina, como la reversión de ladote, el usufructo vidual, el derecho a residenciaperpetua de la viuda en la casa del marido ylas mandas condicionadas, que muestran lasobjeciones de muchos maridos a la hora deconsentir las segundas nupcias de las viudas.La documentación notarial posibilita el estudiode los mecanismos relativos a la asunción de lajefatura familiar. El uso de la plena capacidadlegal les permite tener bajo su responsabilidad ahijos menores de edad, administrar los recursosfamiliares, solventar pleitos y negocios, desarrollarsu labor tutelar y garantizar el casamiento de loshijos con el aporte de unas dotes y arras que,además de avance de la legítima, son garantía dela emancipación de los hijos y de la constituciónde nuevos hogares nucleares
AB This study aims to contribute to thehistoriographic effort to make women visible inthe History of the Modern Age (16th and 17thcenturies). To do this, we analyze the advantagesand limitations of female widowhood in a partof the Kingdom of Seville, comparing the roleassigned to widows in the Castilian legal systemwith the spatial reality of Andévalo and part ofthe Flat Land of Huelva.We investigate households headed bywidows, analyzing their quantitative importance,the guaranteeing mechanisms of legislation andsocial practice aimed at strengthening femalesurvival, such as the reversion of dowry, propertyusufruct, the widow’s right to perpetual residencein the husband’s house and the conditional orders,which show the objections of many husbandswhen it comes to consenting to the remarriageof the widow. Notarial documentation makes itpossible to study the mechanisms related to theassumption of family leadership. The use of fulllegal capacity allows them to have minor childrenunder their responsibility, manage familyresources, settle lawsuits and businesses, carryout their guardianship work and guarantee themarriage of their children with the contributionof dowries and deposits that, In addition tothe advancement of the legitimate, they are aguarantee of the emancipation of children andthe constitution of new nuclear homes
