RT Journal Article T1 Metal effects on germination and seedling development in closely-related halophyte species inhabiting different elevations along the intertidal gradient A1 San José Jiménez, Israel A1 Muñoz Rodríguez, Adolfo Francisco A1 Navarro Roldán, Francisco Juan A1 Ruiz Muñoz, Francisco A1 Sánchez Gullón, Enrique A1 Jiménez Nieva, Francisco Javier A1 Polo Ávila, Alejandro A1 Infante Izquierdo, María Dolores A1 Castillo Segura, Jesus Manuel AB Seed germination and seedling establishment are very sensitive plant stages to metal pollution. Many halophytespecies colonizing salt marshes are able to germinate and establish in highly contaminated habitats and lowmarsh halophyte species seem to show higher tolerance to metals than high marsh species. We analyzed theeffects of copper, zinc and nickel in concentrations up to 2000 μM on seed germination and seedling growth intwo closely related species of Sarcocornia, S. perennis, a low marsh species, and S. fruticosa, a high marsh species.Germination of both halophytes was not affected by any metal concentration, and their seedling growth, mainlyradicle length, was reduced by increasing metal concentrations. Seedlings of S. perennis showed higher toleranceto the three metals than those of S. fruticosa. Our results are useful for designing ecotoxicological bioassays andplanning phytoremediation projects in salt marshes PB Elsevier SN 0025-326X YR 2022 FD 2022-02 LK http://hdl.handle.net/10272/20991 UL http://hdl.handle.net/10272/20991 LA eng NO Sanjosé, I., Muñoz-Rodríguez, A.
