RT Unpublished Material T1 UV-A mediated modulation of photosynthetic efficiency, xanthophyll cycle and fatty acid production ofNannochloropsis A1 Vílchez Lobato, Carlos A1 Forján Lozano, Eduardo A1 Garbayo Nores, Inés A1 Henriques, Marta Helena Fernandes A1 Rocha, Jorge A1 Vega Piqueres, José María K1 Algas AB Nannochloropsis, a green microalga, is source for commercially valuable compounds asextensively described and, in particular, is recognized as a good potential source of EPA(20:5v3), an important polyunsaturated fatty acid for human consumption for preventionof several diseases. Climate change might include variation in the UV levels, as one ofthe consequences derived from the antropogenic activity. This paper shows the responseof Nannochloropsis cultures exposed for 7 days to UV-A added to PAR. Growth ratesand photosynthetic activity were assessed to determine the impact of UV-A increasedlevels on the cell growth and basic metabolism activity. Xanthophyll pigments(zeaxanthin and violaxanthin), carotenoids (cantaxanthin and β-carotene) and PUFAs(miristic, palmitic, palmitoleic, araquidonic and eicosapentanoic acids) were measuredfor assessing the antioxidant response of the microalgae to added UV-A radiation toPAR. The results show that the modulated use of UV-A radiations can led to increasedgrowth rates which are sustained in time by an increased light transduction activity. Theexpected antioxidant response to the incident UV-A radiation consisted of increases inzeaxanthin and β-carotene contents –synthesis of antioxidant carotenoids- and increasesin the SFAs (saturated fatty acids) to PUFAs (polyunsaturated fatty acids) ratio. Theresults suggest that modulated UV-A radiation can be used as a tool to stimulate valuemolecules accumulation in microalgae through an enhanced both light transductionprocess and antioxidant response, while sustaining cell growth PB Springer SN 1436-2228 YR 2010 FD 2010 LK http://hdl.handle.net/10272/2721 UL http://hdl.handle.net/10272/2721 LA eng NO VÍLCHEZ LOBATO, Carlos ; FORJÁN LOZANO, Eduardo ; GORBAYO NORES, Inés ; ENRIQUES, Marta Helena Fernandes ; ROCHA, Jorge.
