T1 Teacher perceptions about cultural diversity management : a qualitative study

AB En este trabajo se analizan las percepciones del profesorado sobre lagestión de la diversidad cultural. Participaron dieciséis profesores y profesorascon experiencia docente entre dos y veinte años, en cuatro escuelassecundarias andaluzas. Se emplearon entrevistas semiestructuradas con elprofesorado de cada escuela. Se obtuvo información complementaria encada escuela entrevistando al director, a cuatro familias de alumnos inmigrantesy a través de un grupo de discusión con los cuatro orientadores decada uno de los centros. Los resultados indican que el profesorado percibela gestión de la diversidad cultural como un problema particular, marginal yexcluido de las prácticas de enseñanza. Además, consideran que se trata deun asunto de adaptación, un problema que debe ser resuelto por el propioalumnado con el apoyo de los orientadores y otros especialistas educativos.El trabajo finaliza requiriendo la articulación, en primer lugar, de un trabajoen coordinación con los especialistas educativos y con la necesidad de incluirla competencia intercultural en la formación inicial y permanente delprofesorado.
AB In this study we explore teacher perceptions of cultural diversity management.Participants included sixteen teachers with experience rangingfrom 2 to 20 years of teaching from four secondary schools in the region ofAndalusia. Semistructured interviews with the teachers from each schoolwere used. Additional information was obtained through interviews withthe principal, four families of immigrant students and a focus-group interviewwith the four school counselors. The results indicate that teachersperceive the management of cultural diversity as a particular problem,marginal and excluded from teaching practices. Moreover, teachersagree that the issue is one of adaptation, a problem to be solved by thestudents themselves with the support of school counselors and other educationalspecialists. The study ends by calling for further work in coordinationwith educational specialists and highlighting the need to includeintercultural competence in initial and continuing teacher education.
