Biography

Dr. Ruiz's research focuses on optimizing the production and green extraction of bioactive compounds from microalgae and vegetables for food and health sectors. She has isolated and cultivated microalgae from extreme environments, like the Tinto River and Atacama Desert, for valuable compounds. At the University of Antofagasta (UA, Chile) and UHU, she led 15 competitive projects on green extraction and encapsulation techniques for functional foods and agrifood waste valorization. As Associate Professor in UA (2017–2024), she directed the LAMICBA lab and later led the “María Zambrano” project at the University of Huelva (UHU), where she is now a “Ramón y Cajal” researcher. To date, she has published 38 scientific articles, 5 book chapters and presented more than 30 works (poster/oral) at congresses. Her work spans academia and industry, collaborating with institutions like UNICAMP (Brazil), CIAL (Spain) and Atacama BioNatural Products S.A. (Chile), while also mentoring students and promoting science outreach. She holds ANECA and CNA accreditations and an R3 Certificate.
