Gracia, pecado y matrimonio entre Mateo Alemán y Alonso Fernández de Avellaneda

Abstract

La controversia teológica de auxiliis divinae gratiae, que enfrentó a jesuitas y dominicos a finales del siglo xvi y principios del xvii, dejó rastros transparentes en la literatura contemporánea. Tanto el Guzmán de Alfarache (1599/1604) de Mateo Alemán como el Quijote (1614) apócrifo de Alonso Fernández de Avellaneda convirtieron las cuestiones teológicas en materia de ficción y lo hicieron de manera equivalente, utilizando los sacramentos del sacerdocio y el matrimonio como motivo y posicionándose con claridad en el bando dominico.

The influence of de auxilis divinae gratie, a theological dispute between Jesuits and Dominicans at the end of the sixteenth and early seventeenth century, can clearly be detected in contemporary novels, such as Mateo Alemán’s Guzmán de Alfarache (1599/1604) and Alonso Fernández de Avellaneda’s apocryphal Quixote (1614). Both texts turn theological issues into fictional matter in a similar way through the use of Catholic sacraments of Marriage and Holy Orders as literary motifs and by taking sides in favour of Dominican positions.
