Las retraducciones castellanas de Epicteto en el siglo XVII: Correas, Quevedo y el olvidado Semple

Abstract

En este artículo se comparan las retraducciones castellanas del Manual de Epicteto del siglo xvii, realizadas por Gonzalo Correas, Francisco de Quevedo y Francisco Semple, recientemente rescatado del olvido. En concreto, se indaga en las posibles fuentes de estos traductores, se estudia su discurso en torno a la traducción, con especial atención a su postura respecto de los anteriores traductores de Epicteto al castellano, y se analizan las características de sus versiones, teniendo en cuenta el contexto en el que surgió y se difundió cada obra. Todo ello evidencia que no existe una poética de la traducción singular del siglo XVII, sino muy diversas formas de aproximarse a ella. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

This article compares the seventeenth-century Spanish retranslations of the Manual of Epictetus by Gonzalo Correas, Francisco de Quevedo and Francisco Semple, recently rescued from oblivion. In particular, the possible sources of these translators are investigated, their discourse on translation is studied, with special attention to their position with respect to the previous translators of Epictetus into Spanish, and the characteristics of their versions are analysed, considering the context in which each work arose and circulated. All this demonstrates that there is no singular poetics of translation in the seventeenth century, but very different ways of approaching it.
