Abstract
The hydrological regime of La Ratosa playa-lake (Málaga) has been significantly affected by the intensive exploitation of groundwater in the area. In unaltered conditions, this lake received surface and subsurface runoff from its watershed (WS), made up mainly by clays and marls, and groundwater from the southern sector of the carbonate aquifer of Sierra de La Camorra. The aquifer, which crops out in the easternmost sector of the WS, is currently subjected to intensive exploitation of groundwater resources. The depression of the piezometric level caused by the groundwater pumping has drastically reduced the groundwater discharge to the WS. Among other things, both the average flooding area of the playa-lake and its hydroperiod were diminished. This paper presents the hydrological characterization of La Ratosa playa-lake, based on the development of a rainfall-runoff model and discusses the major changes caused by the intensive exploitation of groundwater
