La herencia de la controversia arriana en Florence Nightingale

Abstract

La obra de Florence Nightingale sigue generando un gran interés en diferentes áreas de conocimiento, especialmente en enfermería y estadística. Sin embargo, sus escritos filosóficos y teológicos son muy poco conocidos y estudiados. El objetivo de este trabajo es investigar la presencia de la tradición clásica en los escritos de Nightingale, y más concretamente, la pervivencia de los tópicos relacionados con la controversia arriana. Esta polémica teológica sobre la naturaleza de Cristo tuvo lugar en el siglo IV, siendo sus protagonistas clave dos sacerdotes alejandrinos: Arrio y Atanasio. Sus hitos históricos fueron los concilios de Nicea (325 d.C.) y Constantinopla (381 d.C.). La controversia arriana y sus derivadas eclesiológicas habían sido objeto de atención de la Iglesia de Inglaterra en la juventud de Nightingale, especialmente a partir de la obra de J.H. Newman, Los arrianos del siglo IV, publicada en 1832. El método de estudio ha sido el análisis textual de las fuentes, seleccionando los textos más relevantes de las obras completas de Nightingale mediante el uso de las siguientes palabras clave: Arius, Athanasius, Athanasian Creed, Newman, Trinity, Trinitarianism, trinitarian, Unitarism y Unitarian. Los resultados alcanzados muestran que fue constante en Nightingale el interés crítico por la religión y por el modo en que las creencias religiosas adquieren una configuración social en las distintas iglesias. Además, ha quedado de manifiesto que Nightingale conocía extraordinariamente bien la historia de la filosofía y la teología de la Antigüedad. Así, ha sido posible identificar en los escritos de Florence Nightingale la pervivencia de los principales tópicos de la controversia arriana, así como del problema político-eclesiástico que expresaron estos tópicos en el siglo IV.

Florence Nightingale's work continues to generate great interest in different areas of knowledge, especially in nursing and statistics. However, her philosophical and theological writings are little known and studied. The aim of this research is to investigate the presence of the classical tradition in Nightingale's writings, and more specifically, the survival of topics related to the Arian controversy. This theological polemic on the nature of Christ took place in the fourth century, the key protagonists being two Alexandrian priests: Arius and Athanasius. Its historical landmarks were the Councils of Nicaea (325 AD) and Constantinople (381 AD). The Arian controversy and its ecclesiological consequences had been the subject of attention in the Church of England in Nightingale's youth, especially since J.H. Newman's work, The Arians of the Fourth Century, published in 1832. The method of study has been the textual analysis of the sources, selecting the most relevant texts from Nightingale's complete works by using the following keywords: Arius, Athanasius, Athanasian Creed, Newman, Trinity, Trinitarianism, trinitarian, Unitarianism, and Unitarian. The results show Nightingale's critical and permanent interest in religion and in the way in which religious beliefs acquire a social configuration in the different churches. Furthermore, it has become clear that Nightingale was extraordinarily well acquainted with the history of ancient philosophy and theology. Thus, it has been possible to identify in Florence Nightingale's writings the persistence of the main topics of the Arian controversy, as well as the political-ecclesiastical issue that these topics expressed in the 4th century.
