Stellenwert und Darstellung von Naturkatastrophen in der kaiserzeitlichen Historiographie

Abstract

Die vorliegende Arbeit befasst sich mit der Behandlung von Naturkatastrophen (Erbeben, Kraterbildungen, Seebeben, usw.) in der historischen Literatur der römischen Kaiserzeit. Anhand von aus¬gewählten Beispielen wird zunächst die Haltung der Betroffenen einschliesslich der ergriffenen Massnahmen zur Beseitung der Schäden untersucht. Danach stellt sich die Frage, wie die antiken Autoren die Ursachen und die Wirkung der Naturka¬tastrophen bewerteten. Ihre Meinungen reichen von der Aufbietung von rationalen Erklärungsmustern bis zum Rekurs auf religiöse Deutungen. Letzteres gewinnt in der christlich inspirierten Literatur der Spätantike zunehmend an Bedeutung

The following contribution analyses to which extent natural catastrophes (earthquakes, seaquakes, tremors, etc.) are dealt with in the historical sources of the Roman Imperial Age. Firstly, we study the behaviour of the victims of such ca¬tastrophes and the measures adopted in order to re-establish normality after the disaster through some particular examples. Secondly, the opinions emitted by the ancient authors about the causes and the effects of the disasters are listed, taking into account both the rational explanations and the religious interpretations of such catastrophes. The latter has an especial signification in the literature of Christian inspiration during the Late Roman Epoch

La siguiente contribución analiza hasta qué punto se abordan las catástrofes naturales, (terremotos, maremotos, temblores, etc.…) en las fuentes históricas del Imperio Romano. Primero, estudiamos el comportamiento de las víctimas de dichas catástrofes y las medidas adoptadas para restablecer la normalidad tras el desastre a través de algunos ejemplos. Después, se listan las opiniones emitidas por los autores de la antigüedad sobre las cusas y los efectos de los desastres, teniendo en cuenta las explicaciones racionales y las interpretaciones religiosas de dichas catástrofes. La última, tiene un especial significado en la literatura de inspiración cristiana durante la posterior época romana.
