Abstract
After the controversial sale of the Pazo de Meirás in 2018 and the judicial decision in December 10, 2020 that ratified the passing of the site of Cultural Interest into the hands of the State, the current study analyzes the judicial decision's journalistic coverage in the digital press and on social networks (Twitter and Instagram). In order to determine how and to what extent the notions of heritage were addressed by journalists in the newspapers El Mundo, El País, and 20 Minutos, their treatment was compared with the dissemination of content on social networks during the month of December, 2020. Anchored in a mixed methodology research design, this exploratory study principally uses the analysis of textual and visual content to understand the representations of cultural heritage in digital press and social media. The results showed that the media agenda took advantage of the spectacle generated in the field of heritage, highlighting the development of the controversy and other divergent points of view: issues related to the cultural and patrimonial management of the monument, social and political topics linked to the Spanish dictatorship, issues related to the actions of the State, and the looting of cultural property. Many opportunities for patrimonial representation were missed with the media spectacle dominating the agenda.
