Abstract
The origin, documentation, and history of archaisms incorporated into the 12th edition of the Diccionario de la lengua castellana (Dictionary of the Castilian language) of the Royal Spanish Academy (1884) have been studied. The inclusion of archaisms in the 12th edition is a characteristic feature that distinguishes it from the 11th (1869) and 13th (1899) editions, which immediately preceded and followed it, respectively. The presence of archaisms in corpora was analysed and their use in texts was studied according to their typology, author, and date. This analysis is followed by the explanation contained in historical and etymological dictionaries. This provides a detailed description of the type of archaisms that the Academy incorporated into its dictionary in the last quarter of the 19th century and the sources and texts they used
