Abstract
Mateo Alemán was not a professional grammarian, but a bachelor working on merchandise trade who, at some point decided to write and publish an orthography work. This fact included him within the grammatical diatribe of the 16th and 17th centuries. The present study will discuss if the author could consider the idea of writing a Castilian language grammar and, to present the testimonies that support this hypothesis. Therefore, the grammar and orthographical knowledge attributed to Aleman will be analysed through his several works.
