La internacionalització dels problemes de contaminació minera : el Canadà durant la primera part del segle XX

Abstract

L’article analitza els efectes socials i econòmics dels episodis de contaminació minera més greus ocorreguts al Canadà en la primera meitat del segle XX i s’aborden els diferents aspectes del problema de la contaminació minera (legal, científic, tècnic, polític i econòmic), la resolució del qual va sorgir d’una complexa barreja d’experiències pròpies i alienes. La tardana incorporació de les conques mineres canadenques a les xarxes de comerç mundial i el pes del sector miner en l’economia nacional i internacional a partir de final del segle XIX confereixen un especial interès a aquest cas.

The article studies the social and economic effects of the worst episodes of mining pollution in Canada during the first half of the twentieth century and looks at the various aspects of the problem of mining pollution (legal, scientific, technical, political, and economic), the solution of which was the outcome of a complex mixture of experiences, both domestic and alien. The late incorporation of the Canadian mining basins to world trade networks and the weight of the mining sector in the national and international economy from the late nineteenth century onward confer special interest to this particular case.
