Abstract

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
This article explores the role of stereotypes in cultural linguistics through the analysis of Han Kang’s novel The Vegetarian. It adopts a theoretical framework that links stereotypes (Bartminski, 2009) to the concept of cultural mindset (Underhill, 2009) and analyses a corpus of stereotypical statements directed at the protagonist, who adopts a vegetarian diet. These stereotypes reflect an anti-vegetarian cultural mindset deeply rooted in language. The study demonstrates how literature can serve both as a reflection of social discourses and as a valid tool for investigating cultural conceptualizations.
