Abstract
A set of documents and some preserved ephemeral writings demonstrate the existence of the double pronunciation of the patronymic Díaz/Díez, at least in the northeastern part of the Astur-Leonese linguistic domain, during the Middle Ages and Early Modern Age, given that a document of 1699 clearly attributes the variant Díez to a local pronunciation. The sources which are closer to the oral register show a preference for Díez as well. However, this pronunciation was lost due to the gradual imposition of Díaz. In the case of Sayambre, we can observe this phenomenon by means of two instruments employed to replace one variant with another in the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries: the bureaucratic documents and school education.
