El Trienio Liberal en tiempos de independencias: Discursos y representaciones en la prensa de Chile y Perú

Abstract

Partiendo de la consideración de la prensa como un medio tanto de circulación de información e ideas como de discusión en la esfera pública, el presente trabajo intenta aproximarse a las imágenes y los relatos circulantes en el espacio americano respecto al desarrollo del Trienio Liberal en España (1820-1823), sobre sus usos y referencias, en un tiempo clave para uno y otro escenario. En concreto, asumiendo como hipótesis que los acontecimientos que se estaban desarrollando en la Península Ibérica durante otro lado del Atlántico, se dirige la atención hacia dos países andinos que pasaban entonces por situaciones políticas diferentes: Chile, país ya independiente, y Perú, que lo sería poco después tras un enfrentamiento bélico. Para ello se consideran fuentes con enfoques de trabajo diferentes y complementarios: en el primer caso, a partir del periódico oficial editado por el gobierno durante aquellos años; en el segundo, desde la prensa afín a cada uno de los bandos que pugnaban por la independencia o por el mantenimiento de aquel territorio dentro del espacio político de la monarquía española. El análisis, articulado bajo la confluencia de procesos de carácter interno y de dinámicas de política internacional, ha permitido constatar la continuada presencia y referencialidad del nuevo sistema político peninsular en las narrativas proyectadas al otro lado del Atlántico, así como identificar los perfiles que finalmente alcanzaban en uno u otro territorio, con puntos tanto de conexión como de discordancia.

Considering the press as a means both for the circulation of information and ideas and also for discussion in the public sphere, this paper tries to approach the images and stories circulating in the American space regarding the development of the Liberal Triennium in Spain (1820-1823), about its uses and references at a key time for both scenarios. Specifically, assuming as a hypothesis that the events taking place in the Iberian Peninsula during this period were present in the debates and projects that were formulated on the other side of the Atlantic, attention has been directed to two Andean countries that were going through different political situations at that time: Chile, already an independent country, and Peru, which would become so shortly after a war. To this end, different though complementary work approaches have been considered: in the first case, from the official newspaper published by the government during those years; in the second, from the press supporting each of the factions that were fighting for independence or for the maintenance of that territory within the political space of the Spanish monarchy. The analysis, articulated under the confluence of internal processes and international political dynamics, has made it possible to verify the continued presence and referentiality of the new peninsular political system in the narratives projected on the other side of the Atlantic, as well as to identify the profiles that finally reached, in one or another territory, with points of both connection and disagreement.
