Abstract

This essay establishes a cultural bridge between Modernism and Postmodernism by focusing on the use of the motif of the mythic circle in Anglo-American and Hispanic writing, the latter from Spain and Latin America. Beginning with analysis of Faulkner's The Sound and the Fury, the essay examines the symbology of the circle in Anglo-American Modernism, after which this symbology is viewed in light of anthropological and psycoanalytic theory. Este ensayo establece un puente cultural entre el modernismo y el postmodernismo, centrándose en el uso del motif del círculo mítico en la literatura anglo-americana e hispánica. Comenzando con el análisis de “El Sonido y la Furia”, de Faulkner, el ensayo examina la simbología del círculo en el modernismo anglo-americano, tras el cual esta simbología es observada a la luz de la teoría antropológica y psicoanalítica. Se debate el uso del círculo por Borges como un enlace natural entre dos periodos, influenciado por los conceptos postmodernistas/postestructuralistas de “metaficción historiográfica” y “narratividad”.
