Cervantes, Sterne, Diderot : les paradoxes du roman, le roman des paradoxes

Abstract

This paper seeks to demonstrate not only the connections between Cervantes and Sterne, on the one hand, and between Sterne and Diderot, on the other, but also those linking Cervantes and Diderot, which have hitherto been neglected, and to do so by going beyond superficial resemblances in plot or characters. The paper traces these multiple connections by means of a series of paradoxes -two opposed ideas which are neither endorsed nor dismissed as true or false, but kept together in an enriching and creative opposition or balance- on two distinct levels, story and narration, which exhibit opposed visions of reality and ways of reading. Cervantes, Sterne and Diderot wrote novels full of paradoxes, which make explicit the paradoxes implicit in all novels, the paradoxes that define the novel as a genre.

Este documento trata de demostrar no sólo las conexiones entre Cervantes y Sterne, sino también entre Sterne y Diderot. Más aún, las similitudes entre Cervantes y Diderot, las cuales hasta ahora habían sido rechazadas, se analizan yendo más allá de las similitudes superficiales en la trama o los personajes. Este documento traza estas numerosas conexiones usando una serie de paradojas (dos ideas opuestas que no son ni respaldadas ni descartadas como verdaderas o falsas, sino colocadas juntas enriqueciendo la oposición y el equilibrio) en dos niveles distintos: historia y narración que muestran visiones opuestas de la realidad y diversas formas de interpretarla. Cervantes, Sterne y Diderot escribieron novelas plagadas de paradojas, lo que hizo explícito que las paradojas se encuentran implícitas en todas las novelas: las mismas paradojas que definen la novela como género.
