Inventando el inglés como lengua médica : el caso de dos traducciones de la Chirurgia Magna, de Guy de Chauliac en la Baja Edad Media

Abstract

Este artículo pretende ilustrar las distintas formas en que dos traductores medievales diferentes se enfrentan a una misma obra médica al traducirla del latín al inglés medio. Proporcionaremos ejemplos de algunas de las dificultades con las que se encontraron y de algunas de las estrategias que desarrollaron al intentar escribir en inglés sobre un tema que en los siglos inmediatamente precedentes había estado excluido del dominio de la lengua vernácula. El surgimiento de esta prosa especializada en inglés se vio muy condicionado por la imitación del modelo latino, lo que permitió que la lengua madre expandiera sus recursos lingüísticos y estilísticos. La complejidad de la materia, así como el propósito y la audiencia que los traductores tenían en mente cuando llevaban a cabo su trabajo fueron factores determinantes en lo que respecta al grado de influencia del latín sobre los textos en inglés medio, y por tanto, al carácter más o menos técnico de las traducciones.

The aim of this article is to illustrate the different ways in which two medieval translators approached the same medical text when translating it from Latin into Middle English. We will give examples of some of the difficulties they encountered and of some of the strategies they developed when trying to write in English about a topic that in the centuries that just preceded had been excluded from the vernacular domain. The emergence of this specialized English prose was highly modelled after the Latin text, thereby allowing the mother tongue to expand its linguistic and stylistic resources. The complexity of the subject matter, as well as the purpose and the intended audience that the translators envisioned while working determined the extent to which Latin influenced texts written in Middle English and the degree of technicality of the translations.
