Portus y el contexto geomorfológico del delta del río Tíber

Abstract

La localización de Portus, el puerto imperial de Roma, en la desembocadura del río Tíber fue la responsable de su deterioro y posterior abandono, dado que, en dicha desembocadura, el río ha ido construyendo un amplio delta en los últimos milenios. Se han podido establecer tres fases en la evolución de dicho delta: 1) Entre 15.000-8.000 años BP, se produce el ascenso del nivel del mar más rápido tras el final del último periodo glaciar, supuso la inundación y el retroceso de la desembocadura del río. 2) Entre 8.000-7.000 años BP el ascenso marino se ralentizó, dando lugar a la formación de una barrera arenosa litoral y al avance del delta a su abrigo. 3) Desde hace 6.000 años hasta la actualidad el ascenso se fue ralentizando mucho más, mientras que el río continuó aportando sedimentos en su desembocadura, provocando la más importante progradación del delta. Dentro de esta última fase se han diferenciado tres subfases: a) Entre 6.000-2.700 años BP la línea de costa progradó hasta la zona donde posteriormente se construyó Portus. b) Entre 2.700 y 1.900 años BP el delta se expandió hacia el sur por la migración del canal principal del río. c) En los últimos 1.900 años se ha producido la mayor expansión del delta y su mayor modificación antrópica con el fin de mantener las infraestructuras portuarias, que se mantuvieron navegables hasta la Alta Edad Media. No obstante, el avance continuó imparable y en el último siglo los cambios han sido notables debido al incremento de la presión antrópica en la costa y la cuenca del río.

The location of Portus, Imperial Rome’s harbour, at the mouth of the Tíber was responsible for its deterioration and subsequent abandonment, since, at that mouth, the river has been creating a wide delta in recent millennia. It has been possible to establish three phases in the evolution of this delta: 1) From 15,000-8000 BP, the sea level rose swiftly after the end of the last glacial period, involving the flooding and retreat of the river mouth. 2) From 8000-7000 BP, the rise of the sea slowed down, creating a coastal sandbar and leading to the advance of the delta under its shelter. 3) From 6000 BP to the present, the ascent slowed considerably, while the river continued to provide the mouth with sediments, causing the most important progradation of the delta. Within this last phase, three subphases have been identified: a) From 6000-2700 BP, the coastline prograded to the area where Portus was later built. b) From 2700 to 1900 BP, the delta was expanded to the south due to the migration of the river main channel. c) The last 1900 years saw the biggest expansion and the greatest anthrophic modification of the delta in order to mantain the harbour infrastructures, which remained navigable until the Early Middle Ages. However, the advance has remained unstoppable and in the last century changes have been quite remarkable due to the increase of the anthropic pressure all along the shore and the river basin.
