Abstract
American Way of Life, se convirtiera en un
extraordinaria. La identificación que los
norteamericanos han mostrado con su figura
ha sido siempre un espléndido acto de
apropiación y manipulación.
The mystery that has always surrounded the figure of Columbus and the prejudices with which he has been treated transform him into a never ending source of literary inspiration for any period of history. Yet, it is surprising that a man who never set foot in the United States and who represented a culture with dramatically different values from those embedded in the American Way of Life could become a mythical character within American culture since the origins of the nation. The image of Columbus in the United States, as a hero and symbol, is significant. Americans have showed that their identification with Columbus is a splendid exercise of imaginative and political appropriation and manipulation.
