Abstract
Mateo Alemán published his Ortografía castellana in Mexico in 1609. It was a short essay that contained valuable remarks about castilian ortography and several stories about key moments of his life. In this paper we can see how he tried to make a name as an author through the aforementioned work, which is reviewed and contextualized into the gramaticist trend of the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries, elaborating on the reasons that made Alemán write it.
