Abstract

This study analyzes the effectiveness of mindfulness as a therapeutic technique to reduce symptoms of generalized anxiety disorder (GAD) in a university student. The objectives included reviewing previous research on mindfulness in academic settings, analyzing a specific case, developing a therapeutic plan, and evaluating its results. The research was conducted in Ibarra, Ecuador, with a 21-year-old participant from the CRAVING clinic. A quantitative methodology with a single-case design was applied, using strict inclusion and exclusion criteria. The intervention was assessed using the FFMQ, MAAS, and the Hamilton Anxiety Rating Scale. Throughout the sessions, the participant showed sustained improvement in mindfulness skills and a significant decrease in anxiety levels, both psychic and somatic. The results support the effectiveness of mindfulness as a psychological intervention for students with GAD, demonstrating short- and long-term benefits. This study highlights the relevance of mindfulness in university contexts and contributes valuable evidence for the development of culturally adapted therapeutic interventions in Latin America.
