Abstract

In a context of population aging with a growing demand for professionals trained in older adult care, this study evaluates whether three university training programs in Uruguay contribute to reducing negative stereotypes about old age. Results of two studies are presented: the first analyzes stereotypes about old age among students and graduates of a postgraduate program in Psychogerontology, compared with a professional course focused on caregiving. The second compares the levels of negative stereotypes about old age among students in a bachelor's degree program in psychology before and after a course on Psychogerontology. Negative Stereotypes toward Old Age Questionnaire (CENVE) was used. The main results indicate that the level of negative stereotypes toward old age among students in the three programs is, on average, medium-low and that specific training plays a relevant role in reducing them.
