Il circuito fortificato del Portus Romae allo stato attuale delle ricerche

Abstract

A seguito della morte del magister militum Flavio Stilicone e a partire dalla prima decade del V secolo, lo scalo portuense fu oggetto delle irruzioni barbariche per mano di Alarico e successivamente anche dei vandali guidati da Genserico. Le conseguenze di tali eventi spinsero l’autorità statale a munire il bacino portuario e le strutture ad esso pertinenti di mura difensive le quali vennero in parte realizzate mediante la risistemazione e il consolidamento di alcune strutture in alzato, anche riconducibili a locali di stoccaggio delle merci, probabilmente non più necessarie all’espletamento delle attività portuali. Con il presente contributo viene ripreso in esame lo stato delle conoscenze attorno alle vicende costruttive e cronologiche del suddetto circuito murario, il quale, fin dalle prime esplorazioni di stampo antiquario documentate a partire dalla seconda metà del XVI secolo, alle più recenti indagini intraprese sul campo, ha suscitato un costante interesse nell’ambito della storia degli studi portuensi.

From the first decade of the 5th century and after the death of the magister militum Flavius Stilicho, Portus experienced the barbarian incursions of Alaric and of Genseric’s Vandals. These events prompted the state authority to equip the port basin and the structures pertaining to it with defensive walls, partly built through the rearrangement and consolidation of some raised structures relating to goods storage, probably no longer necessary for the activities of the port. This contribution examines the state of knowledge gathered on the construction and chronological events of the aforementioned wall circuit which, from the first antiquarian explorations documented in the second half of the 16th century to the most recent investigations undertaken in the field, has aroused constant interest in the history of port studies.
