Imagen y peso corporal en universitarios: Estudio comparativo México-España

Abstract

En México, el problema de obesidad está influenciado por factores como cultura y sesgos cognitivos y perceptivos, por lo que los principales objetivos de este estudio fueron: a. Comparar el índice de masa corporal (IMC) e imagen corporal ([IC] alteración del componente perceptual e insatisfacción) según el sexo y la nacionalidad (española vs. mexicana); y b. Comparar el grado de alteración del componente perceptual según el IMC y la nacionalidad. Participaron 169 estudiantes universitarios, a quienes se les aplicó el Test de siluetas de Stunkard (2000), para obtener su peso y estatura. Los principales hallazgos indican diferencias significativas en el IMC por nacionalidad, no así por sexo; se encontraron altas cifras de sobrepeso y obesidad entre los mexicanos, y altos porcentajes de peso normal entre los españoles. Se encontraron diferencias significativas en la insatisfacción corporal por sexo, así como en la alteración por nacionalidad y sexo. Además, las mujeres mexicanas y españolas presentan más insatisfacción que los hombres, así como una mayor subestimación del cuerpo. Así mismo, los mexicanos alteran su imagen corporal en mayor medida que los españoles, y existe mayor subestimación en personas con sobrepeso y obesidad, relación que es significativa dentro de la muestra mexicana exclusivamente. En general, los resultados son parcialmente congruentes con la literatura anterior dado que existen diferencias en la imagen corporal y el IMC según la nacionalidad de los estudiantes universitarios.

In Mexico, the problem of obesity is influenced by factors such as culture as well as cognitive and perceptual biases. Therefore, the main objectives of this study were: a. to compare the body mass index (BMI) with alteration of body image and body dissatisfaction depending on sex and nationality (Spanish vs. Mexican); and b. to compare the level of body image alteration depending on BMI and nationality. 169 Spanish and Mexican college students participated. The Stunkard’s Silhouettes Test (2000) was used to measure body image, obtaining weight and height. There were found significant differences in BMI depending on nationality, but not on sex. Besides, high figures of overweight and obesity among Mexicans were found as well as high percentages of normal weight among Spaniards. Significant differences were found in body dissatisfaction by sex as well as in the alteration by nationality and sex. Mexican and Spanish women show more dissatisfaction than men as well as a greater underestimation of their body. Besides, Mexicans alter their body image to a greater extent than Spaniards. Finally, there is a greater underestimation in people with overweight and obesity only among the Mexican sample. The results are partially congruent with the previous literature since there are differences in body image and BMI according to the nationality of university students.
