Museum networks and sustainable tourism management : the case study of marche region's museums (Italy)

Abstract

Over the past twenty years, research on cultural tourism has sought to find a balance between tourism development and cultural heritage conservation. However scholars have not focused on the enhancement of local cultural heritage as an asset to raise awareness of new cultural destinations and to prevent overcrowding in just a few cultural cities. After a discussion of literature on heritage tourism management, this paper presents the results of a survey on museum networks in the Marche Region of Italy. Research suggests that museum networks have an important role in promoting local cultural heritage, but that they are not yet able to exploit economies of scale, to then ensure the museums’ survival and development as well as their contribution to sustainable tourism.Durante los últimos 20 años, la investigación sobre turismo cultural ha buscado encontrar un equilibrio entre el desarrollo turístico y la conservación de la herencia cultural. Sin embargo, los estudiosos no se han centrado en la mejora del patrimonio cultural local como un activo para aumentar la concienciación social sobre nuevos destinos culturales y prevenir la sobrepoblación en unas pocas ciudades. Tras una discusión de la información sobre la gestión del turismo cultural, este artículo presenta los resultados de una encuesta sobre las redes de un museo en la región Marche de Italia. El estudio sugiere que las redes del museo juegan un papel importante en la promoción del patrimonio cultural local, pero que aún no son capaces de explotar la economía a gran escala para asegurar la supervivencia y desarrollo de los museos, así como contribuir a un turismo sostenible.
