Un Balzac picassiano, un Picasso balzaquiano: Mr Frenhofer an the Minotaur, de Sidney Peterson

Abstract

El artículo analiza el cortometraje Mr Frenhofer and the Minotaur (1949), la singular adaptación surrealista que el director vanguardista norteamericano Sidney Peterson realizó del célebre relato Le Chef-d’œuvre inconnu, de Balzac (1837). Se ofrece primero una somera introducción a los principales elementos del mismo y a la fuerte impronta que ha dejado en la historia del arte. A continuación, se estudian las dos contribuciones más relevantes e innovadoras de la película en su recepción de la historia balzaquiana: por un lado, la fusión con los presupuestos artísticos de Picasso y, por otro, el uso de la anamorfosis como técnica capaz de convertir la propia película en una manifestación del tipo de arte que la crítica y un gran número de artistas han visto preconizado en el relato de Balzac y, particularmente, en la figura y en la enigmática obra del pintor Frenhofer, su protagonista.

The article examines the short film Mr Frenhofer and the Minotaur (1949), the unique surrealistic adaptation that the American avant-garde director Sidney Peterson made of Balzac’s famous story Le Chef-d'œuvre inconnu (1837). Firstly, a brief introduction is given to the main elements of the story and its powerful imprint on the history of art. Then, the film’s two most relevant and innovative contributions are considered: on the one hand, the fusion of Balzac’s story and Picasso’s artistic ideas and, on the other hand, the use of anamorphosis as a technique to turn the film itself into a representation of the kind of art that critics and many artists have seen advocated in Balzac’s story and, in particular, in the character and in the mysterious work of the painter Frenhofer, its protagonist.
