Conspiracy theories against LGBTQI+ people: Paedophilia and Gender Ideology

dc.descriptionThis paper was presented at the I International Workshop Disinformation Research, held at the University of Malaga on July 4 and 5, 2023. The objectives of this paper are: (1) to explore on Twitter the cultural products and debates that originate in relation to the acronym LGTBIQ+, the celebration of LGTBIQ+ Pride and the ‘Law 4/2023, of 28 February, for the real and effective equality of trans people and for the guarantee of the rights of LGTBI people’. (2) To identify the main discourses, networks and communities, looking for communication patterns in the dissemination of conspiracy theories. (3) To identify the users and personal or institutional actors who disseminate these discourses and narratives. To do so, using twarc2 and Python, as well as different search criteria based on specific keywords, a collection of 410,015 organic tweets (not retweets or replies) in Spanish between 2020 and 2022 was downloaded on Twitter (Dataset LGTBQ+ 2020-2022*), containing the messages disseminated on Twitter about the debates prior to the entry into force of the law. Likewise, the analyses revealed the dissemination of hateful and conspiratorial discursive axes that associate LGBTQI+ people and the Trans Law with paedophilia, the indoctrination of minors, the spread of sexually transmitted diseases such as monkeypox, genital mutilation and hormone treatments in childhood, etc. Finally, this paper is part of the I+D+i Project titled “Conspiracy Theories and Hate Speech Online: Comparison of patterns in narratives and social networks about COVID-19, immigrants, refugees and LGBTI people [NON-CONSPIRA-HATE!]”, PID2021-123983OB-I00, funded by MCIN/AEI/10.13039/501100011033/ and by "ERDF A way of making Europe". dc.description.abstractEsta comunicación fue presentada en el I International Workshop Disinformation Research, celebrado en la Universidad de Málaga los días 4 y 5 de julio de 2023. El presente trabajo tiene como objetivos: (1) explorar en Twitter los productos culturales y debates que se originan en relación con las siglas LGTBIQ+, la celebración del Orgullo LGTBIQ+ y la “Ley 4/2023, de 28 de febrero, para la igualdad real y efectiva de las personas trans y para la garantía de los derechos de las personas LGTBI”. (2) Identificar los principales discursos, redes y comunidades, buscando patrones de comunicación en la difusión de las teorías de la conspiración. (3) Identificar los usuarios y actores personales o institucionales que difunden dichos discursos y narrativas. Para ello, utilizando twarc2 y Python, así como diferentes criterios de búsqueda a partir de palabras clave específicas, se descargó una colección de 410.015 tweets orgánicos (no retweets ni respuestas) en español entre 2020 y 2022 en Twitter (Dataset LGTBQ+ 2020-2022*), y que contienen los mensajes difundidos en Twitter sobre los debates previos a la entrada en vigor de la ley. Asimismo, los análisis revelaron la difusión de ejes discursivos de odio y conspiranoicos que asocian a las personas LGTBIQ+ y la Ley trans con la pedofilia, el adoctrinamiento de menores, la propagación de enfermedades de transmisión sexual como la Viruela del mono, la mutilación genital y los tratamientos hormonales en la infancia, etc. Por último, esta ponencia forma parte del Proyecto I+D+i titulado «Teorías Conspirativas y Discurso de Odio Online: Comparison of patterns in narratives and social networks about COVID-19, immigrants, refugees and LGBTI people [NON-CONSPIRA-HATE!]», PID2021-123983OB-I00, financiado por MCIN/AEI/10.13039/501100011033/ y por “ERDF A way of making Europe”.
