Abstract

The geologist José Royo Gomez, born in Castellón (1895), started his paleontological studies in his natal area. His first paleontological notes appeared after his recovery of cretaceous fossil bones near Morelia. In particular, he directed his work to Spanish dinosaurs and associated fauna. Subsequently, he studied the general characteristics o f the Wealden in the Iberian Peninsula and other parts of Europe. In addition, Royo published preliminary notes on miocene faunas and floras from Ribesalbes, Cuevas de Vinromá and Alcalá de Chivert, and on quaternary faunas from Villavieja-. After his interest shifted towards the study of Spanish tertiary basins in general (Teruel Basin, Duero Basin, Madrid Basin,...) the paleontology of the área of Castellón was studied less extensively than in the beginning of his Career
