De la Biblia de Ferrara a la Biblia del Oso: traducciones bíblicas del siglo XVI y su relación con las versiones medievales de las escrituras

Abstract

A lo largo del siglo XVI, fueron apareciendo diversas traducciones de la Biblia a la lengua española, alabadas con el tiempo por su perfección y relevancia posterior. Algunas las llevaron a cabo profesores y humanistas, como las de fray Luis de León, que quedaron manuscritas por la censura que pesaba sobre toda versión de las Escrituras en España. Otras salieron del núcleo judeoconverso asentado en Italia, como la Biblia de Ferrara. Otras, por último, se debieron a la labor de huidos y exiliados, acusados de heterodoxia, como la de Casiodoro de Reina. Todas, de un modo u otro, están relacionadas con las antiguas versiones bíblicas que habían traducido los hispanojudíos durante la Edad Media y que habían quedado luego en poder de nobles, reyes o frailes, quienes las custodiaron y salvaron de la hoguera y la Inquisición

Over the course of the sixteenth century, various translations of the Bible, praised for their perfection and enduring significance, appeared in Spanish. Some of these translations, made by teachers and humanists such as Fray Luis de León, remained in manuscript, given the rigorous censorship that ruled over all versions of the Scriptures in Spanish. Others, such as the Ferrara Bible, were made by converted Jews in Italy. And still others, such as Casiodoro de Reina’s translation, were made by exiles accused of heterodoxy. All these translations are related, in one way or another, to the older versions of the Bible that Hispanic Jews had translated in the Middle Ages and which had been preserved by monarchs, the nobility, and friars, who saved them from burning and from the Inquisition
