Abstract
La narrativa interesante de Olaudah Equiano se presenta como un magnífico referente para las
narraciones de esclavitud, porque responde a la controvertida imagen del africano como ser inferior
promulgada por la incipiente “ciencia de las razas” del siglo XVIII, a la vez que desarrolla estrategias de
auto-representación de gran importancia. Para analizar la narrativa, se centra la atención en tres aspectos
fundamentales: en primer lugar, el ataque sistemático a la institución de la esclavitud desmintiendo los
mitos o leyendas promovidos por la ideología racista basada en los principios del racismo científico; en
segundo lugar, el uso del discurso religioso como uno de los discursos dominantes de la época para
consolidar los argumentos en contra de la esclavitud, y, en tercer lugar, la creación de una serie de
estrategias retóricas que facilitan la construcción de un yo narrativo fluido y multirracial.
Olaudah Equiano’s Interesting Narrative is presented as an excellent reference for slave narratives, as it responds to the controversial image of Africans as inferior beings fostered by the incipient scientific racism in the eighteenth-century, while simultaneously developing significant self-representation strategies. To analyze the narrative, attention will be focused on three main aspects: firstly, the way in which the sustained attack on the slavery institution dismantles the myths and legends promoted by racist ideology based on scientific racism’s tenets; secondly, the use of religious discourse as one of the most influential discourses to substantiate pro-abolition arguments; and thirdly, the fashioning of a series of rhetorical strategies that facilitate the construction of a fluid and multirracial narrative self.
