El uso estructural de la madera en la construcción pública de la antigua Roma: el encofrado del muelle del puerto imperial en Portus

Abstract

Se analizan las maderas localizadas en el yacimiento de Portus procedentes del encofrado de la zapata de apoyo al muelle. Datadas entre los siglos II y IV de nuestra era, permiten establecer una cronología constructiva de la infraestructura. Por otro lado, la identificación de las maderas como pertenecientes a los géneros Quercus y Pinus (aparentemente de ámbito frío, en el primer caso, y térmico en el segundo), permite confirmar la existencia de un comercio activo de madera en el Mediterráneo y la preferencia de las maderas pesadas como elementos de sustentación de infraestructuras.

The timbers located in the Portus deposit from the formwork of the support footing to the dock are analyzed. Dated between the 2nd and 4th centuries AD, they allow us to establish a chronology for the construction of the infrastructure. Besides that, the identification of the timber as belonging to the Quercus and Pinus genera (apparently from a cold environment, in the first case, and thermal in the second) allows confirming the existence of an active trade in wood in the Mediterranean, and the preference of heavy timbers for supporting elements of infrastructures.
