Edad U/Th de los travertinos de Beni Younech y correlación con las terrazas marinas cuaternarias de Ras Leona (SE del Estrecho de Gibraltar, Marruecos)

Abstract

Three travertinic levels have been identified in the Beni Younech village, near the Quaternary marine terraces of Ras Leona Point, in the south-eastern coast of the Gibraltar Strait. These travertines developed probably over marine terraces as soon as the latter underwent successively subaerial exposure. Samples from the travertine fronts yielded absolute U / Th ages ranging between 225 and 97 ky BP. These data allow inferring the travertines as formed in a regressive context starting probably at 700 ka BP. The travertinic formation had an important episode at 110-120 ka BP, then characterized by a triple cascade before finishing at about 97-98 ka
