Análisis arqueoarquitectónico y evolución del muelle este-oeste de Portus. Nuevos datos para su comprensión

Abstract

En el presente capítulo se expone la evolución cronológica y funcional que experimentó el muelle este-oeste, comúnmente conocido como de la Linterna, entre su construcción en la primera mitad del siglo III d. C. y su abandono en el siglo VI d. C. Concretamente, las investigaciones arqueológicas llevadas a cabo (análisis edilicio, excavaciones, sondeos rotarios, escaneados láser), permiten teorizar sobre la posibilidad de que nos encontremos ante un muelle que se fue construyendo de manera progresiva según se iba colmatando la ensenada portuaria, correspondiendo el último tramo a una ampliación de época severiana o inmediatamente posterior. Se trata de una infraestructura bastante dinámica a nivel morfológico y funcional, pues a lo largo de los cinco episodios constructivos que hemos podido constatar, se aprecian importantes reformas que permitieron su conversión desde un espacio ciertamente monumental, merced a la presencia de varias columnas, a un área de almacenamiento, para volver a sufrir importantes remodelaciones en época tardía al calor de la fortificación que estaba sufriendo todo el conjunto de almacenes y zonas de atraque de Portus.

This chapter describes the chronological and functional evolution of the east-west pier, commonly known as the lantern pier, between its construction in the first half of the 3rd century AD and its abandonment in the 6th century AD. Specifically, the archaeological research carried out (building analysis, excavations, deep drill coring, laser scanning) allows us to theorise that we may be dealing with a pier that was built progressively as the port inlet was gradually filled in, with the last section under study in this chapter corresponding to an extension from the Severan period. It is a fairly dynamic infrastructure at a morphological and functional level, as throughout the five construction episodes that we have been able to observe, important alterations can be seen that allowed its conversion from a certainly monumental space, demonstrated by the presence of several columns, to a storage area, undergoing further important remodelling again in the late period in the context of the fortification of the whole set of warehouses and dock areas of Portus.
