Abstract
On September 26, 1929, the Spanish Petroleum Company (CEPSA) was constituted, the first private corporation of the emerging Spanish hydrocarbon market. It was founded at the initiative of a financial group (Banco de Cataluña, Banco Hispano-colonial and Banco Central) headed as the first CEO by Francisco Recasens, already present at the time in the Board of Directors of CAMPSA (public monopoly created two years ago by the Finance Minister of the Dictatorship of Primo de Rivera: Calvo Sotelo). Its implementation is key to understand the start of the industrialization of refining in Spain, adding a corporate profile of the new industrial revolution of the twentieth century: presence of financial capital in the industrial market, new forms of managerial capitalism, technological innovation, early internationalization and subsequent transnationalization. However, in view of the scant interest aroused in historiography up to now, knowledge of the history of CEPSA seems quite in the shadow of the focus that the scientific literature has repeatedly dedicated to the Tenant Company, since it was sketched the classic work of Juan Velarde Fuertes and later Gabriel Tortella.
